Ric-Rac Panthers Fan Messy-Bun Earflap Beanie

The football team at our hometown high school, the Perry Panthers, has school colors of maroon and gold. They also have white away-game jerseys, and also alternate uniforms that are primarily black. I'm trying to utilize all of those colors in this hat.

Previous times when I've made this Messy-Bun Earflap Beanie (or the regular hat style), it has been using a combination of three colors. This time I'm attempting to make it using four colors. I sketched out several different stripe arrangements before settling on this configuration. I think it works pretty well at incorporating all four colors while still keeping the maroon and gold as the dominant colors.

Ric-Rac UGA Fan Messy Bun Beanie

Ever since I made one of these beanies for my grandniece Jill almost four years ago, I've been wanting to make one for myself in a messy-bun style (open top). So when Jill's mom, my niece Renee, announced that she would be hosting a party to celebrate the kickoff of Georgia's new football season, I knew that now was the time to grab my yarn and get hooking on this essential accessory. GOOOOOO Dawgs! Sic 'em! Woof! Woof! Woof! Woof! Woof! 🏈

I used scraps of yarn I had in my stash to make this, so, naturally, I ran out of the main red color when I was stitching the brim. I switched to another scrap of red that was a fairly close match to the first red, but there is a tiny bit of difference in the colors. But since this hat is for me, I'm OK with that. 😊

The hat works up quickly, and the cluster V-stitch is super easy while giving the stripes their distinct "ric-rac" look. I use this tutorial on YouTube by Hooked by Robin whenever I need a refresher on how to work the cluster V-stitch. The design is great for showing off the colors of any fandom, and the slouchy, stretchy nature of the beanie is amazingly comfortable for all-game-day wear. The 5/6 ribbed brim in alternating FPDC/BPDC stitches also provides complete, cozy coverage of your ears, which is wonderful on windy autumn/winter game days.

As you can tell by my latest posts, I'm on a beanie-making kick lately, thanks to the approach of fall, my favoritest season in the whole, wide world!! Plus, most crochet hats work up super fast, so it doesn't take long to have your latest favorite hat ready to wear. 

And because crochet hats work up quickly, it also means that I can usually finish one before the arthritis in my hands forces me to take a break from stitching. 👍

 

 

1898 Hat free pattern

I recently discovered this wonderful free "1898 Hat" pattern and went a little crazy making up a bunch of these hats.

There are so many reasons to love this design:

• The double-thick band is extra warm and provides complete protection for the ears.
• Because the band is worked in garter stitch, it's soft and squishy and kind of feels like you're wearing a lightweight but insulating and ooshy-cushy pillow wrapped around your head.
• It's easy to vary the finished size of the hat while using the stitch counts as written by simply altering the yarn weight and/or needle size.
• The style works for practically anyone: male or female, young or old.
• The crown design can easily be modified to achieve different looks (even though the ones I've made thus far are plain). Find a bunch of creative ideas by browsing the pattern's gallery of finished projects.
• The construction is very straightforward and not at all difficult. I especially love the modified i-cord technique used at the bottom "crease" of the hat band.

Pennsylvania hat

Inspired by Sheldon's red knitted hat on "The Big Bang Theory" and fashioned after designer Britta Graham's Textured Sherpa Earflap Hat, while on a trip to Pennsylvania, on a whim I bought a skein of Red Heart Cafe Latte yarn and started crocheting a winter hat in a similar shape as Sheldon's.

I wanted the crown to have a lot of texture, so I used a fpdc pattern, then switched to a smoother pattern for the brim and earflaps.

All that's left to do is to add a chunky tassel to the end of each earflap, but my ambition has stalled for the summer, so this hat will hibernate until the weather turns cold again.

I credit Britta's wonderfully written designs with helping me learn to crochet several years ago, and I highly recommend them to everyone! :-)

Minion hat

This minion hat is a work in progress (meaning that I still need to sew on the smile and some strands of hair), but I have to admit — I've never seen the movie, which is making it difficult for me to decide which grandniece or -nephew to give it to. 

Any of you out there who have seen "Despicable Me," do you think it would be OK to give a minion hat to a preschooler? Or would that be considered too "edgy" or something? Please advise! Thanks!

Jessica's hat

Sarah's new daughter, Jessica, said her three favorite colors are green, blue and black. So I crocheted her an earflap hat using those colors, based on Britta Graham's Bumpy Earflap pattern.

Caleb's hats

For Caleb, I crocheted a Denver Broncos hat, based on Britta Graham's Easy Peasy Earflap pattern, and a Cookie Monster hat, based on Britta's Bumpy Earflap pattern. The eyeballs on Cookie Monster are based on the Froggy Hat pattern at Coats & Clark.

Hats for Xmas

Using Britta Graham's Easy Peasy Earflap Hat pattern, I crocheted matching hats for Charlotte Rose, Wendy and Jill in winter white/pink stripes; for Daniel in Superman colors; and for Breanna in Oregon State University colors.

Here's Daniel's hat finished with a Superman logo patch.
